Prison - As an Interface

Abstract

People frequently connect prisons with punishment and fear. They have a long history of isolating and punishing people who are thought to be troublemakers or criminals. Because they conjure up pictures of gloomy, violent settings, words like crime, criminal, jails, and prisons can arouse strong negative feelings in society. Unfortunately, jails frequently fall short of successfully rehabilitating inmates. Many inmates exit jail and carry on with their criminal behavior rather than making improvements in their life, which creates a cycle of recidivism. The primitive and harsh layout of many prisons, which seems designed to constantly punish and torture inmates, exacerbates this predicament. Instead of just punishing and imprisoning inmates, prisons would concentrate on reform and reintegrating criminals into society. The present situation, however, falls short of this goal. Given that settings have an impact on our ideas, feelings, and behaviors, the architectural layout of prisons may have a substantial effect on the psychological health of inmates. It might be possible to design prison facilities that support positive development and rehabilitation by taking the idea of sensual design into account.
