dc.description.abstractThe Endosulfan tragedy in Kasaragod, Kerala, has left a lasting impact on the lives of its residents, causing severe health disorders and socio-economic challenges. This thesis delves into the design and implementation of a rehabilitation center tailored to the unique needs of the affected population. The primary objectives include analyzing the problems faced by the community, documenting government initiatives, studying the present lifestyle of the victims, and proposing a comprehensive architectural intervention. The tragedy, stemming from the extensive use of the pesticide Endosulfan in cashew plantations, led to detrimental effects on reproductive systems, skin, and nerve tissues of the residents. The ban on Endosulfan in India, achieved through the persistent efforts of victims and social workers, marked the beginning of a challenging journey towards recovery. The thesis focuses on the geographical spread of Endosulfan, affecting communities like Bellur, Panathady, Muliyar, Badyadka, Kumbdje, Karaduka, Ajanoor, Pullur-periya, Kallar, and Kayyur-Cheemeni. By understanding the extent of soil contamination through aerial spraying, the thesis aims to create an integrated living space that considers both the physical and mental well-being of the affected individuals. The justification for this architectural intervention lies in the dire conditions faced by victims, particularly those from the lower strata working as plantation laborers. Limited therapy centers with minimal facilities and long distances create barriers to essential treatments. The proposed rehabilitation center seeks to address these issues by providing proximity to therapies, cultivating a space for sustainable agriculture, and fostering financial support through organic farming. The scope of this thesis extends beyond Kasaragod, exploring possibilities for similar living spaces in areas grappling with comparable issues. However, the study is confined to the limitations of focusing solely on the Endosulfan-affected population in Kasaragod district. In conclusion, the Endosulfan Rehabilitation Center in Kasaragod aims to offer a holistic solution, integrating the built environment with the specific needs of the affected community. Through careful analysis, documentation, and architectural intervention, this thesis envisions a sustainable and supportive living space that fosters healing and recovery for the victims of the Endosulfan tragedy.en_US
