dc.description.abstract | The present investigation was aimed to evaluate the broad spectrum antimicrobial and phytochemical analysis of the alcoholic and aqueous extracts derived from the flowers of Alangium salviifolium. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts were prepared and tested on multiple drug resistant Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococci and Staphylococcus epidermidis) and Gram-negative- (Citrobacter, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter, E. coli and Seratia marcescens) organism. Agar disc diffusion method was used to determine the sensitivity of the test samples and standard antibiotics (Gentamycin, Chloramphenicol, Norfloxacin and Amikacin) were used as reference antibiotics. The results of antimicrobial assays showed that aqueous extract was active against all tested microbial species in inhibiting 10 out of 11 test microorganisms with 08–17 mm zone of inhibition. Citrobacter species which were most resistant to the reference antibiotics was inhibited by the aqueous extract. These results indicated that most of the active constituents (responsible for exerting antibacterial action) in these plants are expected to be soluble in polar solvent. It authenticates that the entire tested microorganism is susceptible to alcohol extracts in inhibiting 04 out of 11 test microorganisms with 04–14 mm zone of inhibition. Qualitative phytochemical analysis of the extract confirms the presence of various phytochemicals like tannins, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, quinines, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, phenols, anthraquinones, steroids, catechin, reducing disaccharide and proteins.
