ANDH INDRIYA - A Learning and Working space for visually impaired.

Abstract

This thesis proposes a learning, working and interaction space for visually impaired children and individuals in Bangalore, focusing on designing a space that enhances independence, spatial understanding, livelihood opportunities and empowers them through architecture. The project brings together training, skill development, and workspace opportunities within a single, accessible campus. The research focuses on multisensory design strategies tactile surfaces, acoustic cues, material contrasts, controlled lighting, and spatial planning to create safe, understandable, and user-friendly environments for visually impaired users. Insights from both national and international case studies help inform the spatial requirements, accessibility guidelines, and design strategies suitable for inclusive environments. The proposed centre integrates learning studios, mobility training areas, workshops, a working hub, a library, public interaction zones, hostels, and outdoor sensory landscapes. By prioritizing user experience and universal accessibility, this thesis demonstrate how architectural design can support confidence, independence, and social participation for the visually impaired community.
