A Center for Healing and Empowerment Designing Support Systems for Survivours.

Abstract

Sexual violence leaves survivors with deep emotional trauma, social isolation, and a loss of self-identity. This thesis proposes a trauma-informed Healing and Empowerment Center in Kannur, a safe, restorative environment designed for survivors of sexual assault and rape. The aim is to support emotional rehabilitation, community reintegration, and economic independence through spaces that uphold dignity, safety, and privacy. The design brings together counselling rooms, therapy studios, meditation spaces, healing gardens, and safe residential units, creating layers of psychological comfort and support. Nature acts as a therapeutic medium through sensory landscapes, edible walls, and reflective water features that foster calmness and inner strength. Beyond healing, the center encourages survivors to become active participants in their recovery. Community-led spaces such as the Malabar kitchen, vocational training studios, and digital literacy labs build confidence, skill development, and self-reliance. Through this integrated approach, architecture becomes an agent of social justice, restoring agency, reducing stigma, and promoting inclusion by blending personal healing with community awareness.
